Most of the pieces we buy are vintage and made to a higher standard than todays mass produced furniture.  They are mostly solid wood, or at least a veneer and the drawers are generally joined with dovetails. Mineral paints are used on the furniture, which means there is no off gassing like you get with most modern furniture.
